Blood flow of the Fetal Descending Thoracic Aorta in Pregnancies Complicated by Pregnancy-induced Hypertension

Abstract
nonivasive Doppler ultrasound technique was used to characterize blood flow in the fetal descending thoracic aorta in pregnancies complicated by pregnancy- induced hypertension(PIH). A. total of 54 examination was carried out during the third trimester in 36 cases of pregnanciet complicated by PIH. The blood flow results were compared with the results from 157 examinat.ons in 92 cases of normal pregnancies. End -diastolic velocity and time averaged mean blood ¢¥low velocity in the fetal aorta were significantly lower in fetuses complicated by PIH than :hose in normal fetuses. The pregnancies complicated by PIH were subgrouped according to the presence of pregnancy complications, such as fetal growth retardation(FGR) and/or fetal distre~s. When the fetuses complicated by PIH did not suffer from above mentioned complications, their blood flow velocities in the aorta were not decreased. There were strong association between impaired fetal blood flow velocities and the presence of FGR and/or fetal distress in pregnancies complicated by PIH. However blood flow per unit of fetal weight showed no signficant changes between all compared groups. The fetal aortic blood flow analysis may be of some value in the follow- up of fetal well- being in pregnancies complicated by PIH especially when they are complicated by FGR and/or fetal distress.
